THE RETREAT

On november 18th 1812 the day after de battle of Krasnoe, we set out very early from our bivouac. The march was a sad and weary one, and terrible tiring. There was a thaw; our feet were wet through; and all day the fog was so thick we could see nothing.

The Imperial column passed.
